ACTA UNIVERSITATIS APULENSIS No 15/2008 CHARACTERIZATION AND MULTISCALE MODELING OF LIQUID CRYSTALLINE MATERIALS AND THEIR BIOLOGICAL ANALOGUES
نویسنده
چکیده
Nematic liquid crystals are textured, anisotropic, viscoelastic materials. The remarkable rheological properties of viscoelastic materials are governed by the flow-induced evolution of molecular configuration. Analogues to liquid crystal flow processes occur in the supramolecular selfassembly processes of living biological tissues. A good understanding of the relationships between rheological properties and microstructural evolution of liquid crystals can provide insights towards a predictive rheology of complex biomaterials. Silk fibers and other biomaterials have embedded the natural structure that is more compatible with other biomaterials, and hence biomedical materials produced from biological inspired microstructures will also display enhanced compatibilities. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 76M20, 76D05.

Multiscale and multiresolution modeling of shales and their flow and morphological properties
The need for more accessible energy resources makes shale formations increasingly important. Characterization of such low-permeability formations is complicated, due to the presence of multiscale features, and defies conventional methods. High-quality 3D imaging may be an ultimate solution for revealing the complexities of such porous media, but acquiring them is costly and time consuming. High...
متن کاملDark-field X-ray microscopy for multiscale structural characterization
Many physical and mechanical properties of crystalline materials depend strongly on their internal structure, which is typically organized into grains and domains on several length scales. Here we present dark-field X-ray microscopy; a non-destructive microscopy technique for the three-dimensional mapping of orientations and stresses on lengths scales from 100 nm to 1 mm within embedded samplin...
متن کاملStructure Development from Simultaneous Phase Separation and Crystallization of Metallocene Polyolefin Blends
Introduction Olefin polymers are the most widely used materials in the plastics industry today. To optimize their properties and processibility, blending is often used. This is particularly important for the metallocene-catalyst based polyolefins. By altering certain shear-thinning and strain-hardening characteristics, blending can enhance the processibility of the material. This is in addition...
متن کاملMultiscale experimental mechanics of hierarchical carbon-based materials.
Investigation of the mechanics of natural materials, such as spider silk, abalone shells, and bone, has provided great insight into the design of materials that can simultaneously achieve high specific strength and toughness. Research has shown that their emergent mechanical properties are owed in part to their specific self-organization in hierarchical molecular structures, from nanoscale to m...
متن کاملCharacterization and Modeling of Pores and Surfaces in Cement Paste: Correlations to Processing and Properties
Cement-based materials have complex multi-component, multiscale structures that first form through chemical reaction and then continue to change with time. As with most classes of materials, the porosity of cement paste strongly influences its properties, including strength, shrinkage, creep, permeability and diffusion. Pores in cement paste range in size from nanometers to millimeters, and num...
